Meet Lily
Back in 2015, Lily wouldn’t come out of her cage. She distrusted people, kept to herself, and the world outside her cage felt like a place that hadn’t been kind to her.
Then HFFN members started visiting.
Slowly, patiently, visit by visit, they earned her trust. No rushing. No forcing. Just time, consistency, and the kind of quiet respect that birds respond to when they’re ready.
And Lily was ready.
Before long she was coming out of her cage on her own, visiting with residents, and soaking up all the attention she had been missing. She discovered that people could be safe. That hands didn’t always mean harm. That the world outside her cage was worth exploring after all.
Today? Lily owns the place. 👑
Watch her in the video below — ten years after HFFN members first sat quietly beside her cage and waited for her to decide they were worthy of her trust.
Moluccan Cockatoos are among the most emotionally complex and sensitive birds in the world. They bond deeply, they grieve deeply, and when they have been let down by people — as so many of them have — they shut down. They stop trusting. They stop coming out of their cages.
What HFFN members gave Lily wasn’t training. It wasn’t treats or tricks or behavior modification. It was simply presence. Consistent, unhurried, respectful presence. The message that someone would keep showing up whether she engaged or not.
That’s what earned her trust. And that trust changed everything.
This is why we do what we do.
Every bird has a story. Every bird deserves patience. Every bird deserves a chance.
Mahalo, Habilitat — for giving Lily her home and for welcoming HFFN into yours. The relationship between our organizations is a reminder of what’s possible when people and institutions look out for the animals in their care.
Mahalo, Jeff — for capturing Lily on video and for letting us share it with the world.
