Haukea’s Second Chance Inside the rescue flock where healing moves in both directions
Meet Haukea, one of nine resident rescue birds at Habilitat — where caring for a parrot with a hard history and recovering from one aren’t such different journeys after all.
Meet Haukea
Haukea is an umbrella cockatoo with a big personality and an even bigger crest. These days, he lives at Habilitat, where he’s one of nine resident rescue birds who play a quiet but powerful role in the program’s recovery work — alongside Amazons, other cockatoos, cockatiels, a Senegal, and a Jenday conure, every one of them a rescue with a story of their own.
At Habilitat, working with the birds isn’t handed out freely — it’s a privilege residents earn. Once they do, they take on real, hands-on responsibility for a flock that depends on them for consistency, patience, and care.
A Cockatoo Meets His Reflection
Crest up, wings out, thoroughly delighted — Haukea recently discovered his own reflection for the first time, and the reaction was pure joy.

Healing That Moves Both Ways
The birds help the residents heal from addiction and past trauma — and the residents help the birds heal too. It moves in both directions.
Many of Habilitat’s birds arrived carrying the weight of hard histories, not unlike the residents who now care for them. Teaching a bird to trust again takes exactly what recovery takes: patience, consistency, and showing up — even on the hard days. It’s a rare kind of therapy where neither side is only giving or only receiving.
HFFN is proud to support this flock directly — our board members make regular visits to Habilitat for wing and nail trims, keeping Haukea and his flock-mates comfortable and well cared for between their work with residents. Habilitat’s director also serves on HFFN’s board, a partnership that reflects something we believe deeply: caring well for parrots and caring well for people are rarely separate missions.
