Why It Matters
Every Bird Has a Story. This One Is Bebo’s.
Bebo — photographed after two years of rehabilitation with HFFN
Bebo came to HFFN as part of our Operation Oahu rescue — one of more than 20 birds pulled from a crisis situation in a single operation. He arrived with a self-inflicted wound that had gone untreated, feathers destroyed, and trust in humans all but gone.
Over the next two years, HFFN volunteers worked with Bebo through patient, consistent rehabilitation — veterinary care, behavioral support, proper nutrition, and the slow, careful rebuilding of trust. The transformation you see in his photo did not happen overnight. It happened because people cared enough to show up, week after week, for a bird who had every reason not to believe in humans anymore.
Bebo is not unique. Every year HFFN takes in birds like him — birds that arrived broken and left whole. Your support makes that possible.
Our Impact
What Your Support Has Made Possible
Since our founding in 2013 — and especially since obtaining our 501(c)(3) status in 2023 — HFFN has been a lifeline for parrots and parrot owners across the Hawaiian Islands. Here is what our community has accomplished together:

100+
Psittacine birds rescued, rehabilitated, or rehomed since founding
🌺

Years of monthly gatherings, education, and member support across Hawaiʻi

All Islands

Reuniting lost birds with their families is one of HFFN’s most active and impactful services — and one that costs nothing to access. Our
Hawaiʻi Parrot & Bird Lost and Found and
Hawaiʻi Parrot Forum have together helped reunite hundreds of escaped and lost parrots with their owners across the Hawaiian Islands. When a bird goes missing — or is found — these communities mobilize within minutes. Your support helps keep these networks active, moderated, and growing.
Kūpuna Care Program
No Kūpuna Should Ever Have to Choose Between Eating and Caring for Their Bird
“In Hawaiʻi, we call our elders kūpuna — and we take that word seriously. A kūpuna who loves their bird should never have to watch it suffer because they cannot afford a vet bill.”
— HFFN President Lea Hollingsworth-Ramsey
Among our HFFN members are a number of low-income senior citizens — kūpuna — who live in senior housing, do not drive, and exist on fixed incomes that leave very little room for unexpected expenses. For many of them, their parrot is their closest daily companion. Their bird is not a pet. Their bird is family.
When a kūpuna member’s bird becomes ill, HFFN steps in completely. All they have to do is call Lea or Natasha. We arrange transportation to pick up the bird, bring it to the veterinary clinic, ensure it receives the care it needs, and return it safely home to its owner. HFFN covers the entire veterinary bill — no questions asked, no paperwork, no conditions.
This program exists because we know our members personally. We know their lives, their circumstances, and their love for their birds. HFFN is not a hotline or a bureaucracy — we are a community, and communities take care of their own.

Your donations directly fund this program. When you give to HFFN, you are helping ensure that a kūpuna living alone in senior housing — whose parrot may be the first voice they hear each morning and the last company they have each night — never has to face the impossible choice between their own needs and the wellbeing of the bird they love.
For kūpuna members in need: Call Lea or Natasha directly. You do not need to explain yourself or prove your situation — we already know you, and we are already here for you. Just call.

Where Your Money Goes
Our 2026 Fundraising Goals
Every dollar raised in our 2026 campaign is directed toward the following priorities — listed in order of urgency:
- Veterinary care for birds in rescue — Avian vet care in Hawaiʻi is expensive and our rescued birds often arrive needing immediate medical attention. Vet costs are our single largest operating expense.
- Kūpuna Care Program — Covering veterinary bills, transportation, and support for our low-income senior members who cannot afford emergency bird care on their own. No kūpuna should ever have to choose between their own needs and the wellbeing of their bird.
- Foster program support — Supplying foster families with food, cages, toys, and enrichment for the birds in their care while they await permanent placement.
- Lost and Found network — Maintaining and growing our Facebook communities that have reunited hundreds of lost birds with their families. Moderation, outreach, and community management take real time and resources.
- Educational programming — Speaker materials, meeting supplies, and resources for our monthly gatherings and community outreach across the islands.
- Emergency rescue operations — When a crisis call comes in, we need to be able to respond immediately. A dedicated emergency fund means we never have to say no because of finances.
- Long-term facility fund — HFFN’s long-term vision is a dedicated parrot sanctuary and education center on Oʻahu. Every dollar contributed to this fund brings that dream closer to reality.
- Organizational operations — Website, insurance, nonprofit compliance, and the administrative costs that keep HFFN running as a legitimate, accountable organization.

🏢 Corporate Sponsorship
Businesses interested in supporting HFFN through sponsorship or in-kind donations are welcome to reach out. We acknowledge our sponsors in our communications and at events.
HFFN is run entirely by volunteers who love these birds as much as you do. We have no paid staff, no corporate backing, and no endowment. What we have is a community that shows up — for the birds, for our kūpuna, and for each other.
If you believe that parrots in Hawaiʻi deserve better care, better education, and a better safety net — your support, in whatever form it takes, makes that possible. Mahalo nui loa. 🌺
