Acceptance of These Terms

By accessing or using hawaiianfeatheredfriendsnetwork.com (the “Site”), or by participating in any program, event, adoption, membership, or activity offered by the Hawaiian Feathered Friends Network (“HFFN,” “we,” “our,” or “us”), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, please do not use this Site or participate in our programs.

These Terms apply to all visitors, members, adopters, donors, volunteers, and anyone else who interacts with HFFN in any capacity. HFFN reserves the right to modify these Terms at any time. Continued use of the Site or participation in HFFN programs after any modification constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

Who We Are

The Hawaiian Feathered Friends Network is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization incorporated in the State of Hawaiʻi. Our mission is the education, rescue, and rehoming of parrots and psittacine birds across the Hawaiian Islands, and the support of a knowledgeable, humane bird-keeping community. HFFN also serves as the AFA State Coordinator for Hawaiʻi.

Our mailing address is 355 Hahani Street #793, Kailua, HI 96734. We are not a government agency, licensed veterinary provider, or legal advisor.

  • Scrape, harvest, or collect data from this Site by automated means
  • Submit false, misleading, or fraudulent information through any form, including adoption applications or membership enrollments

Educational Content and Limitations

HFFN’s care guides, species pages, and educational materials are prepared in good faith by experienced aviculturists and reviewed by knowledgeable community members. However, this content is provided for general informational and educational purposes only.

This Site does not provide veterinary, legal, or professional advice. Nothing on this Site should be construed as a substitute for qualified veterinary care. For any health concern involving your bird, consult a licensed avian veterinarian promptly.

Bird keeping laws, import regulations, and permit requirements in Hawaiʻi can change. HFFN makes reasonable efforts to keep regulatory information current but cannot guarantee its completeness or accuracy at any given time. Always verify current requirements with the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture or relevant authority before acquiring, importing, transporting, or selling any bird.

HFFN is not responsible for outcomes resulting from reliance on information contained on this Site, including but not limited to health outcomes for birds or humans, regulatory consequences, or decisions made in connection with bird acquisition or care.

Adoption, Surrender, and Foster Terms

Participation in HFFN’s adoption, surrender, and foster programs is subject to additional agreements completed at the time of the transaction. The following general terms apply to all such interactions:

  • Accurate information. All information submitted in adoption applications, surrender forms, or foster agreements must be truthful and complete. Misrepresentation may result in disqualification from current or future HFFN programs.
  • Animal welfare. HFFN’s overriding priority in all placement decisions is the welfare of the bird. HFFN reserves the right to decline any adoption or placement at its sole discretion.
  • Hawaiʻi law compliance. Adopters are responsible for ensuring their home, property, and household comply with all applicable Hawaiʻi statutes and county ordinances regarding bird ownership and housing.
  • Inter-island transport. Certain species — including Indian Ring-necked Parakeets — cannot legally be transported between Hawaiian islands. HFFN will not facilitate placements that would require unlawful transport.
  • Quarantine. HFFN’s standard quarantine protocol for incoming birds is a minimum of four months with separate airspace. Adopters and fosters are expected to follow comparable quarantine standards when introducing an HFFN bird to an existing flock.
  • No resale. Birds adopted through HFFN may not be resold, re-surrendered to a third party, or given away without first contacting HFFN and offering the organization the opportunity to take the bird back into its network.

Membership Terms

HFFN membership entitles members to participate in monthly meetings, receive organizational communications, and access member benefits as defined by the board from time to time. Membership does not confer ownership interest, voting rights in corporate governance, or employment status.

HFFN reserves the right to suspend or revoke membership for conduct that, in the board’s judgment, is harmful to the organization, its members, or the birds in its care. This includes but is not limited to harassment of members or board, violations of these Terms, or conduct that publicly misrepresents HFFN.

Charitable Contributions

Donations to HFFN are accepted on the understanding that they support HFFN’s general nonprofit mission. Unless a written restricted gift agreement is in place, all donations are considered unrestricted and may be applied at the board’s discretion.

HFFN is a 501(c)(3) organization; donations may be tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. Donors should consult their tax advisor regarding deductibility. HFFN will provide acknowledgment letters for donations of $250 or more upon request.

All donations are final. HFFN does not issue refunds for charitable contributions except in cases of demonstrable processing error.

Content Ownership

All original content on this Site — including text, care guides, species profiles, graphics, logos, and the HFFN name and mark — is the property of the Hawaiian Feathered Friends Network or its content contributors and is protected by applicable copyright and trademark law.

You may share links to HFFN pages and quote brief passages (with attribution) for non-commercial, educational, or commentary purposes. You may not reproduce substantial portions of HFFN content, republish it on another website, or use it commercially without written permission.

HFFN’s care guides and species pages reflect the knowledge and experience of our community. If you believe any content is factually inaccurate, please contact us — we welcome expert correction from the avian science community.

Disclaimer of Warranties

This Site and all content are provided “as is” and “as available” without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. HFFN does not warrant that the Site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of viruses or other harmful components.

Avian emergencies: In a medical emergency involving your bird, contact a licensed avian veterinarian immediately. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) is not appropriate for bird emergencies — avian physiology differs substantially from that of mammals, and the APCC’s protocols are not calibrated for psittacines. Contact an avian vet or an avian-specific emergency line.

Limitation of HFFN’s Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, HFFN, its board members, officers, volunteers, and agents shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of or related to your use of this Site, your participation in HFFN programs, or your reliance on any content, guidance, or recommendation provided by HFFN — including any harm to birds or persons.

HFFN’s total liability for any claim arising under these Terms shall not exceed the amount, if any, paid by you to HFFN in the twelve months preceding the claim.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or limitation of liability for consequential damages, so some of the above limitations may not apply to you.

Third-Party Links and Services

This Site contains links to external websites and embeds content from third-party services including PayPal, Givebutter, Facebook, and Google. These links are provided for your convenience; HFFN does not endorse, control, or take responsibility for the content, privacy practices, or terms of any third-party site or service.

Your use of linked third-party services is governed by those services’ own terms and policies.

Jurisdiction and Dispute Resolution

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Hawaiʻi, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any dispute arising from or related to these Terms or your use of this Site shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi.

Before initiating any formal legal action, you agree to contact HFFN in good faith to attempt to resolve the dispute informally. HFFN will make a reasonable effort to address legitimate concerns promptly.
