Baby Indian Ringneck Parrot 1

Sometimes the smallest birds carry the biggest stories. This is the story of a baby Indian Ringneck Parrot — a tiny green angel who came to us clinging to life, and who reminded us exactly why we do this work.

How He Came to Us

One evening in April 2019, a Good Samaritan found this young bird and immediately turned him over to HFFN. At first glance, his foot appeared badly injured — something had become tangled around his toes. Whether it was string, twine, hair, wire, or monofilament fishing line, the object had worked its way deep into the flesh, nearly amputating several toes on one foot.

What made the situation even more urgent was that the injury was not recent. By the time he reached us, the flesh on the affected toes had died, and the decay had spread up through the foot, past the ankle, and into the lower leg. When Dr. Walsh at Feather and Fur Animal Hospital examined him, the foot and toes were cold, black, and without blood flow.

The diagnosis was devastating: the foot and part of the leg would need to be amputated. Without surgery, the decay would continue to spread — and this little bird would not survive.

We could not let that happen.

A Spirit That Defied His Circumstances

What struck everyone who met this bird was his extraordinary temperament. Despite everything he had been through, this young Indian Ringneck was gentle, calm, and completely trusting — so sweet and still that you would never guess he was a wild bird rescued from near death. It was as though he simply knew he was in good hands.

We were encouraged to learn that young birds adapt remarkably well to life with one leg. With proper surgery, pain management, antibiotics, and rehabilitation, his prognosis was hopeful. And with a spirit like his, we had every reason to believe he would thrive.
